Cape Lookout Light was constructed in 1859 to warn mariners of the very hazardous shoals along Shackleford Banks. This area is known as a favorite rendezvous point for the infamous Blackbeard and his band of pirates. The distinctive diamond pattern of the Cape Lookout tower was what gave the name Diamond City to a nearby settlement.
