Originally built in 1852, the lighthouse had to be moved in 1876. Storms and shifting sands had caused Tawas Point, where the lighthouse sits, to move by more than one mile. The light is still active today and sits at the tip of the peninsula that shields Tawas Bay from Lake Huron.
