The model for this replica was caught over a coral reef in the Florida Keys. Yellowtail this large are known by anglers as "Flags," due to their electric hues and streamlined body form. The exquisite coloration of this replica not only makes it an excellent fish mount but also an eye-catching piece of art.

Description: The back and upper sides are olive to bluish with yellow spots The lower sides and belly with alternating narrow, longitudinal pink and yellow stripes, prominent mid lateral yellow stripe begins above mouth and runs to tail, broadening as it passes the dorsal fins and caudal fin yellow and deeply forked.

Size: Are common From 1 to 3 pounds. Larger Yellowtail Snapper (flags) run up to 8 pounds. The world record is 8 pounds, 9 ounces. The Florida record is 8 pounds, 8 ounces.

Where found: Juveniles are mostly inshore on grass beds and shallow reefs. Adults are near shore and offshore over sandy areas near reefs, drop offs, and humps.

Remarks: Found mainly in tropical waters. Spawns in midsummer and rarely exceeds 30 inches and 5 pounds in size. Feeds on small fish and marine invertebrates.

Fishing: Fishing for Yellowtail on outside reef areas is the best chance at catching the larger fish. Yellow tail can be very leader shy so light tackle is usually required. Chumming is a good way to get the fish up in the water column in the feeding mode. Small cut baits like fish, shrimp, or squid drifted in the chum slick is productive.
